Old-Fashioned Glazed Sour Cream Cake Donuts

General Mills introduced this recipe to show the versatility of their baking mix beyond pancakes. It became a staple on the side of the box in the late 1950s and 60s, promising a non-greasy, tender crumb that mimicked professional bakery textures. The recipe demonstrated how simple additions like nutmeg and sour cream could elevate a basic mix into a specialized pastry.
Ingredients
- 2 cups Bisquick baking mix
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/3 cup sour cream
- 1 egg
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- Vegetable oil for frying
- 1 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
- 2 tablespoons boiling water (for glaze)

In a medium bowl, combine Bisquick, sugar, sour cream, egg, and nutmeg until a soft dough forms.

Turn dough onto a surface dusted with Bisquick and knead lightly about 10 times.

Roll dough to 3/8-inch thickness and cut with a floured donut cutter.

Heat 1 inch of oil in a deep skillet or heavy saucepan to 375°F.

Fry donuts in hot oil for about 1 minute per side or until golden brown.
