Classic Hello Dollies

The Story

While similar to the Magic Cookie Bar, the 'Hello Dollies' name gained national prominence when the recipe was published on Eagle Brand labels and in newspapers following the 1964 Broadway debut of the musical 'Hello, Dolly!'. It became a staple of community cookbooks and back-of-the-can labels throughout the 1960s. The recipe is celebrated for its distinct layering technique that requires no mixing bowl.

From the back of Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk — since 1960

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine, melted
  • 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup butterscotch flavored chips
  • 1 1/3 cups flaked coconut
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 (14 ounce) can Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk

Directions

    Preheat oven to 350°F (325°F for glass dish).

    Pour melted butter into a 13x9-inch baking pan.

    Sprinkle graham cracker crumbs evenly over the butter.

    Layer the chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, coconut, and pecans in order over the crumbs.

    Pour the sweetened condensed milk evenly over the top of the layers.

    Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until lightly browned.

    Cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before cutting into bars.
