Classic Cool Whip Ambrosia

The Story
Following the 1966 launch of Cool Whip as a non-dairy alternative to whipped cream, Kraft heavily marketed the 'Ambrosia' recipe on the side of the tubs. It updated the traditional 19th-century southern fruit salad by using the stable, frozen topping to bind the ingredients together. This specific version became the definitive American potluck side dish throughout the 1970s and 80s.
Ingredients
- 1 tub (8 oz.) Cool Whip Whipped Topping, thawed
- 2 cans (11 oz. each) mandarin oranges, drained
- 1 can (8 oz.) pineapple tidbits, drained
- 1 1/2 cups Jet-Puffed Miniature Marshmallows
- 1/2 cup flaked coconut (optional)

In a large bowl, gently stir the thawed Cool Whip until smooth.

Add the drained mandarin oranges, drained pineapple tidbits, marshmallows, and coconut.

Fold the ingredients together gently until the fruit is evenly coated.

Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving to allow flavors to meld.
