Classic 7-Layer Bars

The Story
Though similar to 'Magic Cookie Bars,' the '7-Layer' variation became a back-of-the-can staple in the 1960s to showcase the versatility of sweetened condensed milk as a binder. It specifically popularized the inclusion of butterscotch chips alongside chocolate, creating a distinctively rich profile that defined American potluck culture for decades.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup butter, melted
- 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
- 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
- 1 cup butterscotch flavored chips
- 1 cup flaked coconut
- 1 (14 ounce) can Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk
- 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
Directions

Preheat oven to 350°F (325°F for glass dish).

In a 13x9-inch baking pan, combine melted butter and graham cracker crumbs; press firmly into bottom of pan.

Layer remaining ingredients over crumbs in the order listed.

Pour sweetened condensed milk evenly over all layers.

Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until lightly browned.
