Borden's Eagle Brand Creamy Chocolate Fudge

The Story
Known colloquially as 'Foolproof Fudge,' this recipe was heavily promoted by Borden in the 1960s as a shortcut alternative to traditional stovetop fudge which required a candy thermometer. By using sweetened condensed milk, the brand eliminated the risk of crystallization, making homemade candy accessible to the average home cook. It remains one of the most clipped and saved recipes in American history.
Ingredients
- 3 cups (18 oz.) semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 can (14 oz.) Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk
- Dash salt
- 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
Directions

In a heavy saucepan over low heat, melt chocolate chips with Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk and salt.

Remove from heat; stir in vanilla and, if desired, walnuts.

Spread evenly into a wax-paper-lined 8-inch square pan.

Chill 2 hours or until firm.

Turn fudge onto cutting board; peel off paper and cut into squares.
